Fruit and Sweet Sauces for Gnocchi

Fruit does not automatically make gnocchi a dessert. A little sweetness can sharpen the appeal of salty cheese or rich meat; cinnamon sugar and chocolate take the dough somewhere else entirely.

Sweetness as a savory contrast

Pear and Gorgonzola work through the contrast between fruit and sharp, salty cheese. Roasted grapes with feta do something similar, while a few golden raisins give sardines occasional sweet bites. Orange, apple, and peach can also bring acidity and freshness to a gnocchi salad. The interesting part is the balance, not simply adding fruit to a sauce.

When gnocchi become the sweet course

Cinnamon-sugar, apple-cider, strawberry, and chocolate finishes draw attention to the soft dough and its crisp surface. A dark chocolate dip gives a churro-inspired version some bitterness; a strawberry-and-pretzel pairing adds a salty crunch. These are dessert-style uses of gnocchi, with their own textures and accompaniments, rather than savory sauces made sweeter.

Gnocchi with Chocolate Sauce

Dark chocolate makes an appealing partner for cinnamon-sugar gnocchi because it brings some bitterness as well as sweetness. The combination borrows the pleasure of churros and chocolate, but keeps the soft center of potato dough.

A dessert built on texture

The cream-and-vanilla chocolate sauce is smooth beside the sugar-coated surface. Keeping those textures distinct gives each bite both crunch and softness. These are churro-inspired gnocchi, not churro pastry in a new shape.
